Our 2009 camping season has finally begun and I had checked the Zion campground just in time to get the last open spot. So Zion (one of Utah‘s beautiful national parks) was our destination last weekend. Marc, Soazig, and I rented a car and made a 5 hours road trip south to escape our crappy SLC weather. Not that we don‘t have nice weather here. But only during the week. Instead every weekend we have pouring rain and thunderstorms. Anyway I almost expected it to be like that at Zion (would have called it mud camping) but we were lucky and by the time we arrived in Springdale we said goodbye to the last drop of rain.
On Saturday we did the most famous hike at Zion NP: Angels landing. It starts down in the canyon and you walk these serpentines up the mountain. The last half mile is pretty scary. It‘s a narrow path with sharp drop offs and it‘s definitely not recommended for someone having a tendency for dizziness and acrophobia. I wasn‘t sure if I would fall in one of these categories but Soazig‘s enthusiasm was stronger and so we did it. And it was great. So I‘m definitely not afraid of heights (otherwise I would have died up there) and the view from up there was absolutely amazing. Just to give you a small impression:

It‘s a panorama picture we took at the peak and even though I had to make it smaller to fit the page you might see how great it was.
That was our big hike this weekend. Besides that we did a few smaller ones, rode the shuttle, enjoyed the river and our campground. I just love camping….sleeping in a tent, listening to the wild animals out there, making pasta on a small scale camping stove, melting marshmallows over the fire, and being exhausted from a long and exciting day.
On our way back to SLC we stopped by Bryce Canyon National Park to show Soazig another one of Utah‘s treasures.

Wow!!
I guess I missed something in the grand canyons of NYC’s skyscrapers - let’s call it nature. But I definitely got your rain… Pics will follow.
Can’t wait to be there with you, show you around and have a great time (with sun). By the way, is the 11th of July tomorrow??
Och neee… und ich häng hier in diesem öden Dorf fest. Regnen tuts auch die ganze Zeit
